Alfalfa
Alfalfa is one of the most important legumes used in agriculture. It is widely grown throughout the world as forage for cattle, and is most often harvested as hay, but can also be made into silage, grazed, or fed as greenchop. Alfalfa has the highest feeding value of all common hay crops, being used less frequently as pasture. When grown on soils where it is well-adapted, alfalfa is the highest yielding forage plant.
Its primary use is as feed for dairy cattle—because of its high protein content and highly digestible fiber—and secondarily for beef cattle, horses, sheep, and goats. Humans also eat alfalfa sprouts in salads and sandwiches.
In 2009 we conducted several trials on alfalfa and were able to grow as much as 3/4 ton more. We were also able to almost double the crude protein from 12.1% to 22.5%, decrease the acids and increase the
relative feed value to 65.8 for the entire crop. With the computer program used we were able to increase the RFV by over 50 points from Fair to Prime. Montana Alfalfa PDF Report
